Grow Your Own Illinois is a state-wide initiative with the goal of preparing high-quality teachers for hard-to-staff schools. This initiative uses a consortium model to bring together community-based organizations, local public school systems, and institutions of higher education. Leaders are recruited from the community to return to school in order to obtain their bachelor's degrees and teaching certificates. Once these leaders teach in the community's hard-to-staff schools for five years, all school loans are forgiven. Philliber conducted a four-year evaluation which included annual surveys and focus groups with teacher candidates, annual interviews with Grow Your Own staff, annual consortia surveys, data abstraction of teacher candidates' school data, and data abstraction from communities' public school systems.
