The American Ballroom Theater Company promotes ballroom dancing to the general public as an expression of culture, a means of creative investigation, and a vehicle for social interaction and learning. The American Ballroom Theater's educational outreach program, Dancing Classrooms, seeks to build social awareness, confidence, and self-esteem in children. By integration into the upper elementary curricula of participating New York City schools, Dancing Classrooms focuses on teaching students respect and teamwork, as well as skills in ballroom and Latin dancing. Dancing Classrooms serves more than 7,000 students in more than 50 schools on an annual basis. American Ballroom Theater engaged Philliber Research and Evaluation to document changes in student skills, attitudes, and behavior as reported by classroom teachers, parents, teaching artists, and the students themselves.
