Evaluation - Unity Games Basketball Program
Unity Games Basketball Program uses basketball as a vehicle to bring adolescents of all cultures and races together. Teams are created two weeks prior to the start of the games, and primarily consist of seventh and eighth grade students equal in skill level and representing each racial group. The teams meet for two days for sessions that include basketball games, clinics, and workshops run by experienced educators. The workshops include topics such as cultural diversity, youth law, internet safety, gang violence and smoking. Additionally, there is a game room with a disc jockey to provide time for personal interaction, entertainment, and opening and closing ceremonies with speeches by guest speakers and celebrities. The goal of the Games is to break down barriers associated with cultural and racial diversity while promoting inter-racial harmony. Philliber evaluated the outcomes of the project.
