We gather data through conducting focus groups.
Philliber conducts focus groups on a regular basis. In 2017, we were asked to conduct focus groups in Mecklenberg County (Charlotte) North Carolina about access and barriers to contraception as part of the planning process for an initiative to prevent unplanned pregnancies. As part of the current Office of Population Affairs (OPA) funded projects, we conduct focus groups annually among participating youth, their parents, agency staff, and members of local community advisory groups to ascertain opinions of the interventions being delivered in the Bronx by the Children’s Aid Society. We also conducted focus groups with LGBTQ youth to discuss their impression of the proposed curriculum and data collection instruments as part of the evaluation of IN•clued for Planned Parenthood of the Great Northwest and Hawaiian Islands. IN•clued is a five-year project working with LBGTQ youth and health care providers to ensure this population receives health and medical services that are inclusive and informed by the special needs of this group. For the past three years we have conducted focus groups among girls in grades six through twelve related to girls’ empowerment for Girls Inc. of New York City. We have also conducted focus groups with fourth grade teachers for the arts education organization, Dramatic Results, about the benefits and challenges of a STEAM program offered by the organization.
